Remote Work

The Future of Work: Embracing Remote Workforce for Success

The remote-versus-office fight has mostly settled, and hybrid won. Hereโ€™s what that means for hiring, and how to make flexible work succeed for new grads.

For a few years, remote work was a fight: fully remote versus back to the office five days a week. The data now says that fight has mostly settled, and the answer sits in the middle.

Where work actually happens now

Gallup tracks where U.S. employees with remote-capable jobs work. In 2026, about half work hybrid, about a quarter are fully remote and about a fifth are on-site, and the hybrid share has held steady since 2022 (Gallup).

Preferences point the same way. Asked in late 2025, 61% of remote-capable employees said theyโ€™d prefer hybrid, 33% fully remote and just 6% fully on-site (Gallup).

So for most employers, the question isnโ€™t โ€œremote or office?โ€ anymore. Itโ€™s โ€œhow do we make flexible work actually work?โ€

What flexible work means for hiring

Your talent pool gets bigger. When a role doesnโ€™t require five days in one office, you can hire from far more cities and campuses. For early-career roles, that means reaching strong students beyond the schools near your office.

Flexibility is a hiring advantage. Most remote-capable workers want some flexibility, and many will pick an employer because of it. If you offer it, say so clearly in your postings.

The competition gets wider too. The same shift means students near you can work for companies anywhere. Your offer competes with employers in other cities, and sometimes other countries.

The early-career catch

Hereโ€™s the part that often gets missed. Flexible work is great for experienced people who already know the job. It can be harder for new grads, who learn a huge amount by watching, asking and getting quick feedback.

Research on software engineers at a large company found that engineers who sat near their teammates got about 18% more feedback on their code, with the gains concentrated among newer and younger engineers. The same researchers also found evidence that the rise of remote work has hurt young college graduates: in jobs that can be done remotely, their unemployment rose relative to older graduatesโ€™ after the pandemic, a pattern that didnโ€™t show up in other jobs (NBER).

That doesnโ€™t mean juniors should be pushed into the office five days a week. It means flexible work has to be designed with them in mind.

How to make it work, especially for new hires

1. Use anchor days. Pick one or two days when the whole team is in, and make them count: planning, pairing, feedback and social time. Donโ€™t make people commute to sit on video calls.

2. Front-load in-person time for new hires. Their first weeks are when proximity matters most. Bring them in more often early on, alongside the people whoโ€™ll mentor them.

3. Write things down. Teams that document decisions, processes and how-tos are easier to join from anywhere. Documentation is the backbone of flexible work.

4. Make feedback deliberate. Feedback that used to happen by accident now needs a schedule: weekly one-on-ones, work reviews and short check-ins after projects.

5. Assign mentors and buddies. Every new grad should know exactly who to ask when theyโ€™re stuck, and feel fine asking.

6. Judge outcomes, not hours online. Measure what people deliver. Green status dots and instant replies say little about performance.

7. Let teams shape their own setup. Gallup found that employees whose teams set their hybrid policy together were the most likely to call it fair, yet only 11% of employees work that way (Gallup).

The bottom line

Flexible work is here to stay. The teams that succeed with it hire from a wider pool, invest deliberately in their newest people and judge work by results.
